Thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva comes every day to BABA BARKHANDINATH TEMPLE to pay homage. It is believed that Lord Shiva not only cures the “Problems” but also provides “riddhi and Siddhi”.
As the legend goes, around 2500 years ago the Shivlinga of Lord Shiva, appeared at Baba Barkhandinath Temple. Embedded on the pages of history “Ayodhya Yaksya Parmane Panch Yojanam, Devaya Mahadev Sthanam, Vankhandi Vanam", the distance of Ram Janam Bhoomi from this temple is 5 Yojan. The appearance of Lord Shiva at this temple is miracle of this saga. Earlier this area was thick and dense forest, full of wild animals. According to the Mahantji “Once a shepherd came to this place with his herd. He started chopping grass on the forehead of Shivlinga, and when he hit the grass with his axe, it slipped and hit the Shivlinga and blood started flowing through Shivlinga, on seeing this he ran away, as the news reached the ears of then “MAHANT HANUMAN PURI.” He came with his people and started digging the place, but they didn’t get any end of that Shivlinga and he buried the Shivlinga. On that night Mahantji saw the lila of Lord Shiva in dreams & he also heard a divine voice ordering “get up and be prepared for my duty”, he should worship him on that right place where they buried the Shivlinga and the temple was built on that same place.” Earlier the place here used to be forest, due to this the temple name was VANKHANDINATH as time passed it was changed to BARKHANDINATH.

How to reach
Baba Barkhandi Nath Temple is situated at Village -Mahadev, Tehsil-Colonel Ganj, District Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Which is only 3 km away from Colonel Ganj Railway Station. It has its location in parameters as 27º09'48.30"N,81º41'31.25"E .

Road- The Baba Barkhandi Nath Temple is well connected with above cited stations. There is very frequent service of buses to Colonel Ganj, Gonda. The journey can be done by car from Delhi via Kanpur – Lucknow – Gonda Road.
Rail- Direct train are available from Delhi, Satya Grah Express upto Colonel Ganj Station & from Colonel Ganj Station, Public transport are available from the Station. From Lucknow we can get many trains such as Gorakhpur Intercity, Baroni, Avadh Assam Express & Gorakhpur Gonda Passenger Train to reach Colonel Ganj.
Mahantji
Shri Shri 1008 Mahant Sunil Puriji Maharaj, humble spiritual Chief Priest of Baba Barkhandinath Rudrapeeth, took diksha in year 1990 from Satguru of “Spiritual & Rudrapeeth“ Brahmleen Mahant Shri Vishvanath Puri Ji Maharaj. Present Mahantji completed spiritual study in a short span of 13 years and was declared as future Mahant of this Rudrapeeth. After Shri Vishvanath Puri Ji Maharaj took over Shri Shri 1008 Mahant Sunil Puri Ji Maharaj as “Mahant” of this Rudrapeeth on in the year of 1990. He studied Shastras & number of epics at different point of time by different top spiritual instituations and became Mahant in September 2000.
After taking over as Mahant Shri Sunil Puriji Maharaj as per inspiration and direction of lord Shiva started development work around the Mandir Premises & nearby villages. Mahant Shri Sunil Puri is also working with a NGO Alive Dreams Foundation, now he is holding the post of State Coordinator (U.P.). He has started a new experiment in educating the regional people by Dharam Gurus. He has organized an 11 days Education, Environment & Women Empowerment campaign which lasted from 08.05.2010 to 18.05.2010. With this camp awareness was flooded to all the regional people.
Following activities are going on continuously:
1. Akhand Jyoti : In temple Akhand Jyoti of Lord Shiva is continuously burning since February 2007.
2. Moral School : Mahant Shri Sunil Puriji Maharaj is about to start a moral school on every Sunday for all the local students.
3. Daily Poor Feeding (Bhandara) : Daily distribution of food among all local poor peoples in noon time between 12.00 pm to 2.00 pm.
4. Distribution of Prasada : Every day after the arti of Lord Shiva Prasada distributed among all the devotees who are present at the time of Arti.
5. 24 Hours of Ramayan Ji Paath : Continuous 24 hours of Ramayan Ji Paath would be taking place in the temple shortly.
Shri Shri 1008 Sunil Puriji is deeply involved in welfare of poor, down trodden specially girl child in the area.
Do’s & don’t
- The disciples are advised to contact Mahantji for information required.
- During the Sarvan Month (hindu month), Mal Mass (Adhik Mass) & Mela please maintain discipline, wait patiently and coordinate with the Mandir Authorities.
- Please Treat all the devotees humbly.
- Bath, bear fresh clothes, be in queue & chant “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram” while waiting for Darshan.
- Leave the children at home/dharmshala as they may urinate etc. in temple premises and make place untidy. Lying/playing is not allowed in temple premises.
- People are not allowed to enter around Samadhi Areas of ancestors.
- Offerings/Prasada should be handed over to Pujariji.
- For offerings ‘ ‘Bhandara’, Bhramin Bhojan’, ‘Hawan’, to Deity’, etc please contact Mahant Shri Sunil Puriji Maharaj at temple premises.
- Disciples are intimated that entry in inhabited state or after smoking is totally banned.
- Ladies & Children must be accompanied by an attendant.
- If any person faces harassment from any person, volunteer or self worker of Mandir Authorities, please lodge a complaint to Mahant Shri Sunil Puriji Maharaj.
